I speak with healthcare leaders weekly about driving behavior, employee engagement and driving performance. Patient safety is on top of mind for them all, so here are five tips that I’m consistently hearing from these professionals.
• Leaders need to be patient safety ambassadors – when staff members see their leaders continually focusing on patient safety behavior, they will realize it is not a passing fade or a short-term initiative.
• Keep staffing a priority – when departments become under staffed, staff members will cut corners to keep up performance. This will eventually lead to patient safety incidents. The cost of the accident and perception of poor care will have a devastating impact on the bottom line; so don’t be foolish with staffing.
• Encourage transparency – staff members have to work in a culture where coming forward with concerns is encouraged. Ensure that you’re also communicating patient safety information, statistics and results. This alone offers you the opportunity to tie patient safety into other key performance metrics such as patient satisfaction and HCAHPS results.
• Praise Teamwork as a core value – Healthcare leaders need to be ready to reward and spot teamwork. It’s a wonderful core value that often goes overlooked and under appreciated, but its impacting patient safety everyday.
• Limit use of temporary staff – patient safety is a full time initiative and doesn’t take breaks or days off. If you are not around it each and every day, it’s less likely to be on the top of your mind.
