New Hire Poll - The 60%

I believe most of us would agree that when it comes to new hires, it is very important to get them engaged and contributing to the organization as soon as possible.

According to Leadership IQ study of 20,000 new hired employees, “46% of rookies wash out in their first 18 months."  So I recently ran a Poll within LinkedIn, trying to determine what HR professionals believed has the biggest impact on a new hires impression of the company. (Take the Poll here

The Poll: What do you feel has the biggest impression on a new hire?  
- The new boss (15%)

- The first day with the company (10%)

- Employees they will be working with (15%)

- The Company’s on-boarding/training (60%)

I should have included HR’s involvement as a possible answer, based on some of the feedback I received. Several people felt that HR carries the burden of not only creating the on-boarding program, but delivering the experience as well.

The 60% for on-boarding and training is not alarming and validates a recent study by The Wynhurst Group. The study found that “new employees who went through a structured on-boarding program were 58% more likely to be with the organization after three years.”

What I am now wondering is how companies measure the success of the structured on-boarding program. Why?  The Wynhurst Group also reported that 22% of new hires turnover within the first forty-five days of employment.  (Take my new poll

Based on my conversations with HR professionals, I believe the lack of measurement will be a high Poll response, as 45 days is not a lot of time.
